Critique - Open Show

I would like to thank the Officers and Committee for their invitation to judge today. It is always an honour to be asked to judge at a breed club show and it is one I took on with sincerity and enthusiasm. I would also like to thank the exhibitors for such a super entry. I had a lovely day, due in no small part to the sportsmanship ringside and generous applause for all the winners. Some classes warranted two first placings and I was splitting hairs in some cases. Overall I was delighted with the quality of the exhibits all, bar none, were shown in immaculate, clean condition. Thank you also to my daughter for stewarding for me. It is so much easier to judge when you have a steward that knows the ropes.

PD 5, 1
1st Howard’s Mr Red Edition - Stunning, masculine g&w puppy. Beautifully presented in good coat. He has a wide jaw with correct bite. Correct nose placement and large dark eyes giving soft Shih Tzu expression. Strong neck leading to good shoulders and level topline. A well ribbed, deep chest for one so young. Correctly set tail carried well. His movement was true and he made good use of the ring, driving well from behind with good reach in front. Delighted to award him BPIB,
2nd Roy’s Elzu Field of Dreams - Such a shame this lovely boy had to meet one on such top form today. He has many attributes of one, a masculine yet soft expression. Large dark, expressive eyes. Good mouth and dentition. Well muscled body, level topline and moving really well. On the final decision I just preferred the tail set and carriage of 1.
3rd Lucas’ Jadetemple Cesare

Critique: Special Awards Classes

Thank you to the officers and committee for the invitation to judge the three Special Awards classes at this ever popular Open Show in Stroud.

I was treated to some lovely quality dogs and bitches, many of whom have gained high awards at both Open and Championship Shows and could have shared first places today.  It was so good to have 'hands on' at this level of competition and have the experience of being put to the test of making decisions in what I can only describe as having to split hairs to decide on my final places.

So thanks to all my entries for this opportunity.

Special Junior Dog or Bitch (13/7)
1st Mrs J Anderton's Pekoe One Direction, 13 month old gold and white dog who was top of the class for his good solid condition and polished performance.  NIce head piece with good dentition in a wide jaw.  Pigmentation good, giving that all important definition around the eyes and lips.  Nicely balanced youngster both fore and aft with good bone throughout.  Chest well let down and a good spring of rib, not overdone, allowing free movement typical opf a well constructed dog.  Nice firm loin, level top line and enough curve to his tail.  Covers the ground with ease.
2nd Miss J Sullivan's Viola-Hitas Almost an Angel at Jacquinta, 7 month gold and white bitch showing lots of promise.  A beautiful head with such a feminine expression, one that hold your gaze.  A pleasure to go over with good bone and well developed muscle.  A well balanced youngster on the move showing a clean pad going away and reaching well through coming forward.  Pushed hard for 1st.

Special Post Graduate Dog or Bitch (5/3)
1st Cloughlea I'm a Believer for Marhilway, 17 month old gold and white dog who is so full of type and shows excellent promise, a clear winner in this class.  Good head properties, beautiful soft expression whilst still retaining a masculine look, largely due to excellent dentition in a firm wide jaw.  Excellent bone throughout, well constructed fore and aft with lovely spring of rib and firm over the loin.  Well balanced on the move showing plenty of driving action from the rear.  Overall a lovely dog.
2nd Mr J Somers Shirmin's Ebony ar Meilijo, 3 year old little black bitch who showed her socks off.  Of a smaller type, she has bodied up well since the last time I met and judged her and has gained more confidence doing a grand job with her young handler.  She has a beautiful head and such an oriental expression, with huge dark eyes, another that you could gaze at all day.  She is nicely balanced and covers the ground well.

Special Open Dog or Bitch (5/3)
1st Mrs P Maule's Jo-KIns Watch Me Fly Fly to Daltricia (Imp Nor), 17 month old black and white dog.  This boy ticks so many boxes, he exudes bone, starting with a head to die for, strong skull (and back skull), so masculine yet with the soft expression desired in our breed.  I loved his angulation both fore and rear allowing a free flowing economical movement.  Well sprung rib and well let down but not so much as to throw out the elbows which can often be the case with an overdone rib.  He was presented in hard condition, so firm over the loin.  Will watch him with interest.
2nd Mrs JM Bradshaw and Mrs MJ Symonds Cremfern Sweet Talkin Guy JW, 2 year old gold and white dog who I have admired since he was a puppy.  He didn't disappoint for quality and certainly commands attention, a very polished performer. I liked his head and expression.  Like 1 he has good pigmentation giving definition around the eyes and mouth. He has good spring of rib, and well let down from a prominent sternum.  Angulation good, allowing the free flow and balanced movement covering the ground with ease. Firm although shorter in coupling than the winner that just gave one the edge today on ratio.

A different type to the winner but so full of quality and style that he will always be there abouts in the rankings.
