About the Club

With the dramatic rise in Shih-Tzu’s being registered with the Kennel Club, and a huge increase in pet owners and show exhibitors (not that we could blame you for loving a Shih-Tzu) a new Club was founded and named in the 1980’s, The Shih Tzu Club of South Wales and Western Counties. With only two clubs responsible for the huge amount of protection this desirable breed would need in the future it was clear there needed to be more. Casual talks of the protection and limited clubs to do this took place at the shows. This then led to a formal meeting at the Usk Memorial Hall organised by Mr Les Williams and the late Stephanie Williams. With all round top judges attending this meeting and with a great turn out a Patron, President, chairperson and other committee members for our club were found. Mr David Samuels became our much respected Patron, Mr Elwin Harding taking place of our President and Mrs Irene Booth and Mr Jack Booth took on the position of Chairperson and Treasurer. Diana Harding was to take the role of Secretary, and with this other members of the breed were elected to be committee members, and the club was accepted by the Kennel Club. With a hard working committee and guidance from the beginning from senior officers, the club became very successful, without the support and guidance we had, we may not have made it this far.

In this ever changing world, a new and as determined committee took on the hard work and responsibility to keep the success and popularity of the South Wales and Western Counties Club going. The Club remains as strong as ever, offering to its members and others in the breed, a championship show every spring, and an Open show every winter. The club also offer seminars and other events which are supported by the Kennel Club.
